This unit focuses on the discipline of mathematics and it precedes a series of units on mathematics education. A sound personal knowledge of mathematical concepts, procedures and connections will be developed. Other related issues are those of anxiety towards mathematics and levels of confidence of educators about teaching mathematics. This unit aims to address those issues through identifying personal attitudes towards mathematics. In part, this is addressed by extending personal numeracy to that required of educators and informed members of society through consideration of mathematics in work and leisure, as well its role as a tool for understanding the world at large.
